JJ 5751Â Preamp Tube
The JJ 5751 preamp tube can be used in most 12AX7 circuits to achieve more headroom.
The JJ 5751 was designed as a “ruggedised” high mu, dual triode tube with similar specifications to the 12AX7. With 30% reduced gain, the 5751 is a fantastic way to tame a distortion stage and tone shape an amp. They and are often used to quiet down guitar amps that have too much gain.
These “short plate” 5751’s utilise a “short plate” design and the tubes have great compression and harmonic complexity, they are perfectly suited for creating articulate mid-range and warmer high end response.

Hi folks, don’t underestimate the “70% gain” allocated to this tube-type, as unless you’re running your over-drive dial on 10 already with a “regular 12AX7” as there’s more than enough over-drive available in these JJ-5751’s. Their main feature is in accessing the clearer vintage-like tube tones, that allow you genuinely access authentic vintage sounds from the 1960’s-70’s, like you hear on your favorite recordings, & yet still be able to turn-up-the-heat by dialing in more gain that’s right-up-there with current tube over-drive sounds. You just have to turn the dial up to a higher number. Versatility is the key here to their use & sound, & these JJ’s imo appear to have quite a nice balance of sound that’s up-front, even-tempered, but not in-your-face, & have a really awesome sparkle & shine to them that you have to hear for yourself to appreciate. I’ve also found that after say 5-10 hours of use, they really open-up in their sound qualities, & the thunder comes in warmer & earlier on the lower gain settings, so be patient, & know that they’ll sound much warmer, clearer & yet fatter after a few weeks use. Definitely the pick of the tube-stack if you’re the main soloist in your band. These babies will also allow you to swap from your Fender single-coil guitars to Gibson hum-bucker’s without having to mess around with your EQ settings, allowing for quick & simple guitar changes on stage once you set-them-up together. Remember that you can always “add” signal boosts here like compressors & other effects devices to get “more” over-drive sounds if needed at all. Your EQ settings will also stay pretty consistent from low gain-settings to higher ones with these JJ-5751’s, & this is where higher gain tubes change in EQ characteristics I’ve found over the years, meaning that you have to play with the EQ settings every-time you change gain-settings.. Very much in this instance, less=more with these tubes. My amp is a 1993 Tube Works RT2100 4 x 10 combo that I’ve had since new, & it sounds pretty good to me, as these JJ’s honestly, & quite surprisingly ball-park the original Yugo-ECC83’s ( think Telefunken long-plates), & I wasn’t expecting such a pleasing result.

Amazing tubes,
Got them in my Marshall jcm 800 2203, instantly tames the preamp into vintage JMP territory!
Just let them warm up for abit then they sizzle!!

Rated as lower gain than regular 12ax7’s so it takes a tad longer to break up but what really stands out is the sustain on the upper level harmonics on this tube. Probably my favourite preamp tube of all time & i’ve tried them all.
